The newly announced deputy speaker of Bedford Borough Council first visited the then County Hall when he was expelled from school, but following a career as a barrister is returning in more auspicious circumstances.
Cllr Tim Caswell (LibDem, Goldington ward) was unanimously elected as Deputy Speaker of Bedford Borough Council last week.
Born and bred in Bedford, Cllr Caswell’s first job was on Bedford market and as a barman in a bingo hall. Since then, he has practiced as a barrister, written a play and worked with people who are homeless.
Becoming a Liberal Democrat councillor in 2019, Tim has served on the Police and Crime Panel and as Vice Chair of Adult Services Scrutiny committee. He takes part in regular litter picks and is also a passionate campaigner on homelessness and rough sleeping.
Nominating Tim, Henry Vann (leader of Bedford Borough Liberal Democrats) said: “It gave me great pleasure to propose Tim Caswell. Tim has great constitutional, legal, social and democratic expertise, which will put the Council in good stead.
“He will do an excellent job as Deputy Speaker.”
Seconding the nomination, Cllr Bywater (Green Party, Castle and Newnham ward) said: “I think Tim Caswell will be an excellent Deputy Speaker.
“He is someone of real integrity, someone who works well across political parties and someone who will embrace the social and civic activities, supporting the various events that happen throughout the year.”
Tim said: “I am very pleased to be given this opportunity and look forward to the year ahead immensely.”
