Bedford Borough Council has paused green bin waste collections following a fire at Elstow Transfer Station, which broke out on Friday night (4 July).

While the station is out of action, they have confirmed that green waste kurbside collections will be suspended throughout the Borough for the next two weeks.

The collection of black and orange bins will continue as normal.

An email to Bedfordians said: “We know this isn’t ideal, especially for all our green-fingered residents (we see you, and your beautiful gardens), but it’s necessary while we transport priority waste to another licensed site.”

The email thanked everyone for their patience and understanding, saying that teams were working hard behind the scenes “to keep things running as smoothly as possible”.

Any extra garden waste can be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) on Barkers Lane
