Christmas will soon be upon us. December always seems to pass so very quickly and there hardly seems time to complete all the tasks that need to be done – writing cards, buying presents, doing the cooking, finding and decorating the tree.
And this year there will be, more than ever, the worry and real fear of the cost of it all and how we can keep our homes warm.
Well, is it worth it? Why do we bother to keep Christmas anyway in today’s secular society? Yet we keep doing it because it speaks to a deep need and willingness to open ourselves to those we love, to give as well as receive.
For many people of faith, Christmas is not an escape from reality, but rather an entrance into the midst of a greater reality.
For in the birth of Jesus, love was offered and came down. That love is at work in our lives as we celebrate Christmas with our friends and families and continues with us in our daily lives throughout the year.
