Celebrate Small Business Saturday in Bedford this weekend

Small Business Saturday is being celebrated this weekend throughout the UK, reminding shoppers to show some love to the independent shops and businesses that make our town centres unique.

The Bedford Independent spoke to Town Centre Champions’ Helen Patterson about their plans to celebrate Small Business Saturday in Bedford.

“After the two huge successes of the popular FiverFest events in Bedford, I wanted to get behind Small Business Saturday UK to support local businesses as small businesses can make a big difference to a town’s identity and, ultimately, it’s success.

“The campaign encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and there is no better time to promote our local shops and business than the run-up to Christmas. Of UK consumers surveyed by Statista in 2018, 28% said they would be doing most of their Christmas shopping on the high street.

“Personally, I am aiming to buy at least 90% of my shopping on the high street this Christmas season.

“Shopping on the high streets, particularly in local independent shops, often leads me to find some treasures I would like to receive myself from Santa so it’s a win-win for me. I would never browse in the same way in a chain store, or online shop, like I do in a local indie.

“So far, thirteen (unlucky for some but lucky for Bedford shoppers) small businesses have created special offers exclusively for shoppers on SBSUK, Saturday 7 December.

“Where FiverFest focuses on local, indie bricks and mortar business, with SBS we actively encourage home business owners who sell on online marketplaces such as Etsy to take part.”

Brilliant Bedford businesses taking part include The Store, John Medhurst, Silks Hair & Beauty, Black Cat Farm Shop, Roosters Sandwich Shop, BBTea, Crumbs That’s Tasty, Made by Sarah, Epitome Jewellery and Hot Cocoa.

There’s still time to get involved. Businesses can register at https://smallbusinesssaturdayuk.com/my-small-business and if you would like to run a special offer, please contact Town Centre Champions at facebook.com/champbedford or email bedford@towncentrechampions.co.uk

Now more than ever, we need your help to fund the Bedford Independent’s quality journalism that serves our community...

We choose to champion editorial independence, meaning we report the facts without bias and can stand up to those in power when we believe it’s needed.

We can give a voice to people in our community whose voices may otherwise not be heard. And we don’t have a paywall, so everyone can read the stories we publish for free.

But in this time of crisis, many news organisations all over the world are facing existential threat, with advertising revenues plummeting. We’re no different.

We work hard every day to bring you news, commentary, entertainment and announcements from across Bedford. We hope that, with your help, we’ll be able to continue this for many years to come.
