Housebuilder Bellway has purchased a 27-acre site in Cranfield, where it plans to build 180 new homes.
The site, located north of Braeburn Way, already has outline planning consent for residential development. More than a third of the homes are proposed to be affordable housing, offered through affordable rent and shared ownership schemes.
The development would also include a new car park for community use, to be created on land to the rear of Cranfield High Street.
Following the completion of the land deal with Richborough, Bellway’s Northern Home Counties division is now preparing detailed plans for submission to Central Bedfordshire Council.
Bellway says the plans include green open space, a children’s play area, mown footways and a wildflower meadow. The company also expects to make financial contributions to local infrastructure, including schools, public transport, leisure and outdoor sport facilities.
Paul Smits, Managing Director of Bellway Northern Home Counties, said they plan to build “a range of two, three and four-bedroom homes as well as two-bedroom bungalows for private sale.
“There would also be a significant number of affordable homes within the proposed development to support people in need of high-quality, low-cost housing.”
Construction is expected to begin in 2026, subject to planning approval.
