A new business-led initiative to help local companies take advantage of major investment opportunities has been launched in Bedford.

More than 400 businesses gathered at King’s House on Tuesday (28 April) for the launch of BedX, the Bedfordshire Opportunity Exchange.

Preparing for growth

The initiative, led by Bedfordshire Chamber of Commerce, has been created in response to calls from businesses for clearer visibility of opportunities and better access to supply chains.

It is designed to help firms prepare for a pipeline of investment across the region, including large-scale developments such as the proposed Universal project.

Justin Richardson, chief executive of Bedfordshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “There is a real sense that Bedfordshire is entering a period of significant opportunity, but the businesses that benefit will be those that are ready to engage with it.

“BedX is about making sure our business community has the insight, connections and practical support needed to take that next step with confidence.”

Key partners involved

The launch event brought together organisations involved in shaping the region’s economic future.

These included representatives from Universal Destinations & Experiences and Luton Rising, and Suffolk Chamber Supply Chain engagement for Sizewell C, as well as contributors from The Bedford College Group, Bedford Borough Council and THSP.

The initiative has developed from a steering group formed in 2025 and now brings together businesses from sectors including construction, logistics, manufacturing and professional services.

Focus on supply chains

BedX aims to help businesses understand where opportunities will emerge and how to position themselves within complex supply chains.

Organisers said many opportunities linked to major developments are likely to sit within Tier 2 and Tier 3 supply chains, where preparation and visibility are key.

Support will include access to a tender readiness diagnostic tool, as well as a programme of workshops and webinars focused on procurement and scaling.

Open to all businesses

The initiative is open to all businesses across Bedfordshire, regardless of size, sector or Chamber membership.

It aims to act as a central point of connection to ensure companies do not miss out on opportunities due to a lack of awareness or preparation.

Further events and support programmes are planned in the coming months to build on the launch and help businesses engage with emerging opportunities across the region.
