Bedford based Gale Family Trust has made an unprecedented donation of £500,000 to two local hospices to support them through the coronavirus pandemic.
The Gale Family Trust was set up to make donations to charitable causes in Bedfordshire and usually makes small donations to various charities each year to support their work.
This year, however, with hospices in the area facing increasing pressure in the light of the coronavirus pandemic, the trust made the unprecedented decision to make a significant donation instead.
Keech Hospice Care and the Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice will now each receive £250,000.
“The Gale Family Trust have been supporting Keech Hospice Care since 2003,” said Liz Searle, CEO of Keech Hospice Care.
“During this time, thousands of children and adults, and their families, have been supported by our nurses who are currently working tirelessly around the clock, on the frontline.
“We’re absolutely delighted to receive a substantial donation from The Gale Family Trust this week.
“We’re so touched by their generosity over so many years, particularly as we rely on around 70% of our funding for our care services to come from our amazing local community and supporters.
“It costs around £6 million every year to provide our excellent care services. Following the outbreak of Covid-19, the care we provide for seriously ill children and adults, and their families, is needed now more than ever.
“Our funding has been significantly affected by the pandemic and this donation will go some way in helping us to be able to continue making the difference when it matters the most now and into the future.”
Speaking about the difference the donation will make to the Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice, Tori Ablard, Head of Hospice Fundraising added: “We want to say a huge thank you to the Gale Family Trust for their incredible donation to Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice.
“We provide expert palliative care for local people with life-limiting conditions, as well as supporting their families.
“Our nurses, doctors and healthcare team are currently working hard on the frontline providing vital end of life care in challenging circumstances.
“We need to ensure we can keep our hospice running at a time when it is needed most, and are extremely grateful for the Gale Family Trust’s support at this time.
“It is so humbling to see the amazing local support during this time. This donation will help make sure we can be there when it matters for people at the most difficult time of their lives.”
While the Gale Family Trust donation is significant, it is still only covers a small part of each hospice’s annual running costs.
