Lots of Bedford's business-owners are backing the CRIB appeal

SMART Prebend Centre staff and volunteers took to the streets to promote their annual Cold Relief In Bedford (CRIB) appeal.

The day centre in Bedford is open every day of the year, supporting those who sleep rough, are vulnerably housed and often face issues around social isolation and exclusion.

It is a place of safety, meeting the basic needs of service users; providing food, warmth, water, a place to shower and rest.

It costs over £250,000 per year to keep the centre open and is entirely reliant on donations and the support of the community.

This year the SMART team are aiming to raise £60,000 from the CRIB appeal.

SMART’s Communications Manager explained, “CRIB is our biggest fundraising campaign of the year, with donations being used to fund core costs at the Prebend Centre throughout the harsh winter months.

“Gaining local support is vital to the campaign, so we have been visiting local businesses to talk about the importance of the appeal and to ask for help.

“The support we have received has been overwhelming, with all local business owners keen to help promote the appeal.

“I’d like to offer my heartfelt thanks to every one who is backing the appeal, including those who have donated, our fabulous fundraisers and all who have helped to spread the message.”

Town-centre supporters are helping in many ways; donating, putting up posters, holding fundraising events and promoting via social media.

You can support the SMART Prebend Centre to stay opening during these bitterly cold winter months by making a donation. Just £10 could provide breakfast for 30 people You can donate here

Now more than ever, we need your help to fund the Bedford Independent’s quality journalism that serves our community...

We choose to champion editorial independence, meaning we report the facts without bias and can stand up to those in power when we believe it’s needed.

We can give a voice to people in our community whose voices may otherwise not be heard. And we don’t have a paywall, so everyone can read the stories we publish for free.

But in this time of crisis, many news organisations all over the world are facing existential threat, with advertising revenues plummeting. We’re no different.

We work hard every day to bring you news, commentary, entertainment and announcements from across Bedford. We hope that, with your help, we’ll be able to continue this for many years to come.
