Two organisations are partnering this month to mark the 55th anniversary of Bangladesh’s Independence with the theme of ‘Asha’, meaning hope.
Bangladesh declared its independence on 26 March 1971, and to honour this historic milestone, iLearn Bedford and Queen’s Park Community Organisation (QPCO) will host a special community celebration titled ‘Asha’ (আশা) on Saturday, 18 April in Bedford town centre.
The event will take place from midday to 7pm at Harpur Square and the Harpur Suite.
The day will feature a vibrant programme of cultural performances, reflections on the historical significance of independence, moments of remembrance, traditional cuisine, artisan crafts, and opportunities to engage with the stories and legacy of Bangladesh’s journey to nationhood.
Legacy
Shadhinota Dibosh (স্বাধীনতা দিবস) commemorates the moment when the people of Bangladesh embarked on the Liberation War for freedom, dignity, and self-determination.
The conflict that followed was marked by immense sacrifice, resilience, and unwavering determination. A legacy that continues to inspire generations around the world.
The 2026 celebration carries the theme ‘Asha’ (আশা), symbolising the triumph of spirit, the continuity of heritage, and a forward-looking vision rooted in peace, unity, and opportunity.
The event, taking place in Harpur Square and the Harpur Suite, is a chance to reflect on history while celebrating the contributions and aspirations of today’s Bangladeshi community in Bedford.
Bedford’s tapestry of cultures, faiths and histories
A proudly multi-diverse town, Bedford is enriched by its tapestry of cultures, faiths, and histories.
The Bangladeshi community has played a significant role in the social, cultural, and economic life of the town, through business, education, health services, entrepreneurship, and civic engagement.
This celebration showcases that enduring impact within a spirit of inclusion and mutual respect and is made possible by the support of the National Lottery Community Fund and the Harpur Trust.

The celebration is being delivered in partnership with Queen’s Park Community Organisation through its Back to Our Roots programme, which works with communities to celebrate and share their cultural heritage across Bedford.
