A Year 11 student from Bedford Girls’ School is celebrating being appointed as a First Sea Lord Cadet (CCF RN/RM) for 2025, marking a significant moment in her cadet career.
Emily Borner is one of only three appointments awarded to CFF Royal Navy cadets nationwide, recognising her dedication and ability to inspire others.
The ceremony, held in Portsmouth onboard HMS Victory on Friday, 31 January, took pace in Nelson’s quarters and was attended by senior Royal Navy officers, including the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Ben Key, KCB, CBE, ADC, who presented Emily with her certificates and badges in the Great Cabin.
Following the investiture, the cadets toured HMS Prince of Wales in Portsmouth.
As a First Sea Lord Cadet, Emily will represent the Royal Navy Cadet Force at national events, high-profile ceremonies, and ship visits throughout the year. She will wear the distinguished No.1 uniform, signifying her role as an ambassador for the Corps.
The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) programme, run in partnership with Bedford School, provides students with valuable opportunities to develop teamwork, leadership, resilience and practical skills.
Through regular training and activities, students gain first-hand experience of discipline and responsibility, which are highly transferable beyond school life. Many students who have participated in the programme have gone on to successful careers in the armed forces, inspired by their time in the CCF.
“Meeting the First Sea Lord onboard HMS Victory was an incredible experience,” said Emily.
“Speaking with someone so inspiring and engaging with fellow cadets who share my interests was truly memorable. The weekend’s ambassador training covered communication, presentation and media skills, but the highlight for me was hosting a dinner at RMR London.
“As President of the Mess, I ensured the evening ran smoothly and oversaw timings for speeches and events. I am excited for the year ahead and grateful for all the support I have received.”
CCF Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, Mrs Milton, added: “I am so proud of Emily’s achievements.
“This is a huge honour for her and Bedford School CCF. The opportunities ahead of her are endless, and I wish her all the best for her forthcoming engagements.”
