Bedford Ladies and Girls FC now have a walking football team for those players who prefer a slower version of the beautiful game due to age, health, injury or fitness issues.
A Bedford squad of nine players, ranging from 39 years of age upwards, travelled to Romford to take part in the first ever national Women’s Walking Football League. This was the team’s first tournament under the Bedford Ladies and Girls FC name, and despite the heavy rain and wind the atmosphere was positive with some great football played.
Bedford kicked off in style against West Ham coming away with a huge 16-0 win thanks to one goal from Tracey Moore, two from England international Kathryn Critchell, and goals galore from captain Linda Thomas and midfield maestro Tash Folwell.
Bedford banged in yet more goals in their next match beating Dagenham and Redbridge 14-1, with further goals from Thomas and Folwell, one from Moore, and one from sub Ann Wolter.
Moore, Thomas and Folwell all scored again in Bedford’s final game against an experienced Crystal Palace side, with Bedford coming out 3-1 winners in a hard-fought match.
Top scorer of the day for Bedford was Tash Fowell with 16 followed by Linda Thomas with 11. Bedford currently top the Southern League table with nine points and a goal difference of 31 and are looking forward to their next fixtures on 19 April against teams including Spurs, Canterbury Old Bags and Bracknell.
Bedford Ladies Walking Football are also looking forward to taking part in the national FA Fives football festival in May along with over 5000 other teams, to celebrate the European Championships taking place across the continent in 2020.
Bedford Ladies and Girls FC will also be hosting their very own tournament, for Under 8’s through to open age 11-a-side and walking football, on 20 June at the Rugby Club on Wentworth Drive.
