With league season fast approaching, many of Bedford Hockey Club’s senior players were on pitch at the weekend for pre-season friendlies.

All the Club’s ladies’ teams were in action.

The Ladies’ 1s National League squad travelled to Bishops Stortford on Saturday, followed by a double-header on Sunday, away in Oxford, for a triangular along with Stourport.

The Ladies’ 4s put in a strong performance on home turf, taking on Huntingdon, and were very satisfied with the 4-0 score-line.

The rest of the Ladies’ teams participated in interclub matches, with a fast-paced game between the Ladies’ 2s and 3s, and a match involving players from the 5s, 6s and 7s.

These games provide a useful opportunity for team captains and coaches to experiment with positions and tactics, and for players to try out new skills.

The Men’s 1s will be hoping their 3-1 victory over City of Peterborough will be a precursor of the season to come, as they make a push to return to National League status.

The Men’s 2s, meanwhile, had an evenly balanced match with Cambridge Nomads, which saw the teams level at 1-all until the closing minutes of the game, when Cambridge managed to steal the glory with a match-winning goal.

The next two weekends will see further friendly and training matches across the Club’s teams before the start of the league season on the 19th September.

If anyone is looking to try hockey for the first time, or to return to hockey after a period away, the Club will be running a series of free hockey taster sessions.

Anyone aged 13 upwards can come along and ‘train’ with one of the Club’s qualified coaches, from 7-8.30pm on 2, 9 and 16 September at the hockey centre on Chester Road, Bedford.

These sessions are targeting a more social level of player, but the Club is always looking to recruit more experienced players, too.

Anyone who would like further details of these sessions, or about joining the Club, can contact the respective Club Captains, Josh Dixon (Men’s) or Kate Costin (Women’s) via the Club website.
