Bedford Carnival campaign starts a fight for your right to party

Bedford is known for its wonderfully diverse population and now a Bedford woman is setting about bringing all those communities together to create Bedford Carnival.

Sharon De Leonardis is campaigning to raise the funds and volunteers needed to create what she says will be a “Carnival for Bedford”.

She told us: “Bedford has one of the most diverse communities outside of London and the idea is to bring them together and intergrate to get the best of all our diverse communities to celebrate the town we share.”

The idea is to run the carnival on alternate years opposite the river festival so Bedfordians have something to look forward to and take part in every summer. Sharon officially launched the idea at an event on Tuesday night and the idea has already been welcomed by Bedford Borough Council and community leaders across the town.

But, Sharon says that what they really need to make this happen, is for people from all of Bedford’s communities to get involved: “This is a Carnival for and about Bedford, and who better to make that a reality than the people of Bedford themselves. We want people from all cultures, backgrounds and social groups to get together and join in and create a legacy for generations to come.

All they need to do to become a part of the team is email me at”

Cllr Sarah-Jayne Gallagher, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, added: “As someone born and bred in Bedford , I have always known one of the best parts of the Town and Borough is its unique and diverse communities and culture.

Working together offers a real opportunity to create something that is not only spectacular on the day but helps build stronger and more vibrant communities.”

Sharon will also be on In2Beats 106.5 Fm on Sunday between 14.30 and 16:00 talking about the project.
