Are you eligible for the Warm Homes Discount this winter?

As fuel prices soar, many people in Bedford Borough may be eligible for help to heat their homes this winter as part of the government’s Warm Home Discount.

The Warm Home Discount is a government scheme that gives people receiving certain benefits a payment of £140 towards their winter electricity bills for winter 2021 to 2022.

It’s paid for by energy suppliers and this is in addition to, not instead of, Cold Weather Payments and Winter Fuel Payments.

Mayor Dave Hodgson said: “I would encourage all residents to check if they are eligible for the Warm Homes Discount, which could be worth £140 off their fuel bills this winter.

“This is particularly important as we will see big increases in fuel bills this winter.”

Do you qualify for the Warm Discount Home Scheme?

There are two ways to qualify for the Warm Home Discount Scheme, and depending on which category you are in, dictates how you can apply for the discount.

  • Residents who get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit known as the ‘core group’ should receive a letter between October and December 2021 telling residents how to get the discount if they qualify. The letter will say if residents need to call a helpline by 28 February 2022 to confirm their details. The electricity supplier will apply the discount to the bill by 31 March 2022. If you think you are eligible for the ‘core group’ and do not get the letter by 31 contact the Warm Home Discount helpline on 0800 731 0214.
  • For residents on low income who meet their energy supplier’s criteria for the scheme – known as the ‘broader group’ it will be the electricity supplier who decides who can get the discount, and residents should apply to them directly. The number of discounts suppliers can give is limited. Check with the supplier as early as possible to see how to apply. The electricity supplier will apply the discount, if granted, to your bill by 31 March 2022.

To check with your energy supplier if the 2021-22 Warm Home Discount applies to you, contact:

British Gas:
EDF Energy:
Npower – no longer exist: they are now part of E.On
Scottish Power –
Bulb –

Residents can still qualify for the discount if they use a pre-pay or pay-as-you-go electricity meter.

The scheme opens on 18 October 2021.

The money is not paid directly to residents but is a one-off discount on electricity bills, between October and March.

Residents may be able to get the discount on gas bills instead if the supplier provides you with both gas and electricity. Contact the supplier to find out.

The discount will not affect Cold Weather Payments and Winter Fuel Payments.
