The A421 in Bedford has been closed in both directions following a police-led incident, with drivers warned not to attempt to bypass roadblocks by driving against traffic.
Bedfordshire Police said closures are now in place on the eastbound carriageway at the A6 roundabout, including both the exit slip to the A6 and the access slip from the roundabout onto the A421.
Road closures
The latest update follows earlier closures on the westbound carriageway, as well as Cardington Road and Cambridge Road, after officers were called to an incident near Priory Business Park.
National Highways confirmed the A421 is shut in both directions between the A6 at Elstow and the A600 at Shortstown.
Delays of around 20 minutes have already been reported, with congestion stretching for approximately two miles. Motorists have been warned that delays are likely to increase.
Safety warning
Police have also issued a warning after reports of some drivers attempting to drive on the wrong side of the road to avoid the closures.
Officers said this behaviour is “extremely dangerous” and urged motorists to remain on the correct side of the road and follow traffic management in place.
Motorists are being advised to avoid the area and plan alternative routes while emergency services deal with the incident.
Police said they are working to relieve traffic and resolve the situation as quickly and safely as possible.
