Applications are now open for a bursary scheme offering financial support to students in Bedford Borough heading to university this year.
The Harpur Trust’s University Bursary Programme will provide funding to 16 students from low-income households to help with the cost of higher education.
£4,500 available
Each successful applicant will receive £4,500, paid over three years, which can be used towards accommodation, books, food, transport, IT equipment and other study-related costs.
The scheme is open to Year 13 students studying at local schools and colleges, including:
- Bedford Academy
- Bedford College
- Bedford Sixth Form
- Biddenham International School
- Kimberley Sixth Form College
- Mark Rutherford School
- Sharnbrook Academy
- St Thomas More School
- Wixams Academy
To be eligible, students must be aged 19 or under on 31 August 2026 and have lived in Bedford Borough for at least two years.
Applicants must also be from a low-income household, living independently or facing additional financial challenges, and planning to start a full-time undergraduate or foundation degree this autumn.
They must be a UK citizen, an EU citizen with settled status, or have indefinite leave to remain in the UK.
Helping students
Victoria Reed, grants manager at The Harpur Trust, said the scheme is designed to reduce the financial barriers that can prevent some students from going to university.
“Our University Bursary Programme is designed to remove some of the financial pressures that can make higher education feel out of reach for some students,” she said.
“Many of those we support have faced significant personal or financial challenges, and this funding helps give them the stability they need to succeed.
“The bursary allows students to focus on their studies rather than worrying about day-to-day costs, and we hear from students how the support makes a difference to their university experience.
“With the rising cost of living and studying, we know there are students who would benefit greatly from this support. We encourage students to review the criteria and apply.”
Since launching in 2007, the programme has supported more than 280 students, with almost £1 million awarded to help local young people with their university studies.
