Bins behind Tavistock Street will now be dealt with by Bedford Borough Council’s Environmental Enforcement Team after the Bedford Independent passed on a reader’s concerns that they had not been collected in weeks.
However, upon speaking to the council, the recycling bins which belong to flats in one area of Tavistock Street had actually not been collected for almost five months.
The council says the reason they’ve not collected the bins in so long is due to them being “consistently contaminated with black bin bags of mixed rubbish.”
“We have been experiencing problems completing recycling collections since last September,” said a council spokesperson.
“The flats have been provided with the required quantity of communal refuse and recycling bins, as specified in the Council’s Waste and Recycling Operational Policy document.”
The flats themselves are managed by a single landlord. The Bedford Independent has been unable to make contact with them to ask what action they are taking to clean up the bins.
However, the council now says they’re going to take further action.
“We have been trying to engage with the landlord and the residents over the last three months to explain how these bins should be used and encourage them to use the recycling bins properly.
“This has included sending letters and leaflets to all the flats but unfortunately, this seems to have been ineffective. The matter has now been escalated to the Council’s Environmental Enforcement Team.
