Bedford Town are celebrating a barely believable Southern League title after a 2-0 win against Stourbridge in front of a big crowd at The Eyrie on Saturday secured a promotion to step two of the non-league pyramid for the first time since 2006/07.
A first half settler from captain, Ryan Blake was added to by Jack Davies in the second period as Bedford Town held off Kettering Town to achieve promotion to what looks likely to be National League North.
After achieving promotion to this level via the play-offs last season, many thought Bedford Town would be up against it to stay in the division, but Lee Bircham and his men have completed the improbable and become champions.
The Eagles needed just a point to seal the title, and would have done so regardless as Kettering Town drew 2-2 against Banbury United, but it matters not as the Bedford Town party will go long into the night after a stunning title win.
Captain Blake leads the way
While many Bedford breaths were held throughout the first half of the campaign, the Eagles’ run of form in the second half of the season left very little to chance, dropping just fourteen points from the end of December to now.
That consistency in the form book had left Bedford Town in pole position to clinch the title coming into the final day, but a loss would have put their fate into the hands of Kettering Town: the only team in the division that had the propensity to leapfrog the Eagles prior to kick off.
Stourbridge were the side faced with the task of spoiling the party at the Eyrie. The West Midlands side came into the game in 9th and had nothing to play for but pride after their play-off charge was stymied by a fateful string of poor results in February and March.
While the Glassboys did travel in numbers, and in good voice too, they were all but drowned out by the 2,000 plus Eagles fans packed into the Eyrie.
Despite all that was riding on the result, there was an overwhelmingly confident energy in the ground.
Bedford started, as you might expect in a game of such magnitude, with tempo and goalscoring intent.
The roar from behind the goal for a Bedford corner awarded in the first minute was a sign of just how intense the support was for Bircham and his side on the day.
Just five minutes in however, it was the visitors who almost drew first blood.
A corner from Alexander Bradley was lifted into a perfect position for EFL journeyman, Tyrone Barnett. Fortunately for Bedford, his header bounced just wide of Jonathan Macauley’s left post.
Eight minutes after a guilt-edge opportunity for Stourbridge at one end, Bedford Town hit back at the other, etching the first few letters of their name into the league trophy.
As is often the source of their threat, the Eagles’ opener came from a Sam Brown long throw in, which has become a staple of Bircham-ball over the last nine months.
Brown’s original delivery was rebuffed by the Glassboys, but it fell back to the Bedford’s number three, who dug out a cross aimed at Bedford captain, Ryan Blake.
He acrobatically fired the ball past Lewis Benjamin to rouse the home crowd into a frenzy of flying beers.
For the next five minutes, chants of “Championes” rang through the home end as they sensed the job was almost done. If they needed any proof that it wasn’t going to be that simple for their side, the remainder of the half served as that.
Stourbridge asserted themselves in the game following Blake’s goal, having many a chance to draw level.
Jai Verma looked a bright spark for the away side, creating chances for Freemantle and Barnett in attacking areas, but the two up top were impotent in front of goal.
The Eagles were somewhat fortunate to make it to half-time without conceding and were in need of a more imposing second half display to truly wrap up the race for the title.
No personnel changes were made by Bircham at half-time, but his players did seem to come out for the second period in better stead.
Bedford were managing sustained and patient spells of possession, knowing that one more goal would seal a memorable promotion at the first time of asking. With 25 minutes to go, an unlikely source provided that goal.
Bedford’s second and all-important goal came courtesy of another set piece, this time a corner.
Hilliard delivered a teasing ball to the back post, which Benjamin could only flap half clear to the feet of Jack Davies. Bedford’s number two finished on the swivel like a natural-born number nine to once again blow the roof off at the Eyrie.
The remainder of the game consisted of just two things, game management and waiting patiently for the whistle. Bedford had a few half-chances to add a third but no such goal came, nor was it needed.
Upon the full-time whistle, the Bedford players and staff swarmed into a bundle of jubilation on the pitch, before celebrating with legions of fans around the ground as the announcer read out their title of champions of Southern League Premier Central.
Undoubtedly, celebrations for fans and players will go long into the night, and while the weight of the achievement is unlikely to set in for some time yet, Bedford Town are officially a part of step two going into the 2025/26 season.
