A Bedford man is walking 166km to Brighton this weekend to raise money for a children’s cancer charity.

Godwin ‘Goddo’ Debattista will embark on the challenge on Saturday 26 September, arriving in Brighton on Sunday 27th. His daughters will be joining him for some of the journey to provide moral support.

So far, Goddo has raised £3,120 for Children with Cancer UK and if you would like to add to his grand total, you can sponsor him at his Justgiving page.

Explaining the reason for his fundraising, Goddo said, “17 years ago my dad Joseph was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer, and was recovering in hospital.

“When I was visiting him one day, came across an eight-year-old child cancer patient.

“His chatter and smiles, despite all the pipes/tubes attached to him, left a huge impression on me. It was a watershed moment that changed my life.”

Last weekend, Goddo undertook his last training walk – an unenviable 50km walk all around Bedfordshire – having completed two practice walks (32 k Bedford to Northampton (6 hours) and 42 k Bedford to Northampton (8 hours)).

“As long as God gives me good health, I will forever support charities who help children with cancer and their families,” said Goddo.

“No child should ever have to ask their mummy and daddy if they are going to die.”

We choose to champion editorial independence, meaning we report the facts without bias and can stand up to those in power when we believe it’s needed.

We can give a voice to people in our community whose voices may otherwise not be heard. And we don’t have a paywall, so everyone can read the stories we publish for free.

But in this time of crisis, many news organisations all over the world are facing existential threat, with advertising revenues plummeting. We’re no different.
