An 11-year-old pupil from Castle Newnham School has smashed his fundraising target by ‘braving the shave’ and cutting his hair in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
Vaska Millard was inspired to raise money for the charity after his grandmother – known as Grammy – died of the disease four years ago. He originally set out to raise £300, but his current target is over £2,000.
He told the Bedford Independent that going from long to short hair felt strange, especially in the cold weather.
“I’m used to my neck being warm, but I’ll get used to it and I’m wearing my hat a lot,” he said.
“I think I will grow it long again because I want to do it again and donate my hair to charity.”
Despite the transformation, Vaska said that his friends had no trouble recognising him. “They were prepared because they knew what was happening and they know my glasses and face!
“I definitely feel proud to have raised so much money in memory of my Grammy. I really miss her. She was an amazing Grammy and I love her.
“Hopefully the money will go to helping someone who has cancer like she did.”
