Quizzing: Quiz night in aid of The Place Theatre’s Raise the Roof fundraiser
The Place Theatre @ 7pm
Tickets: £3 per quizzer

The team at The Place Theatre love their quirky little venue [so do we – Ed], but even they admit that it needs some extra TLC right now.

The roof needs repairs so that they can aim to keep the rain on the outside of the building and it leaks in several places.

“There are noticeable damp spots in our most used rehearsal room,” said The Place Theatre’s Lissy Malt. “The space is a hub for community arts and engagement and we want to keep it that way. Our Raise the Roof campaign seeks to help raise enough to properly repair the dodgy spots on the roof and hep with the general upkeep of a 60-year-old flat-roofed building.”

The theatre is holding charity events throughout the year in aid of the Raise the Roof campaign and this month sees a charity quiz, hosted by the theatre team. On 12 April, form a team (maximum six people), grab a table and settle down for a fun and informal night of quizzing. All proceeds will go towards the campaign.

The hand of a builder placing bricks as they build a wall

Everybody deserves a decent home they can afford. But the young and lots of others are missing out with sky-high house prices and heavy mortgages. People are paying huge rents for often squalid places with little future security. Shelter has declared a national housing emergency.

So what is this housing crisis, what are the causes and how are we going to sort it? This presentation will try to give some answers.

We will look at how the country responded to housing crises after the two world wars with a mission to build ‘Homes for Heroes’. And what we can learn from the successes and failures of council homes and private housebuilding over the years.

Examples from abroad and home will show how we can do things differently and better. We will discuss what our politicians and others should do now to end the crisis.

Live music: Bingo Fury
Bedford Esquires @ 7.30pm
Tickets:

The Pad Presents team are bringing Bingo Fury to Bedford – an artist who’s on many tastemakers’ lists for 2024.

Bingo Fury conjures a glitzy – altogether seedy – Broadway sheen. Influenced by classic songwriters as much as pioneers of alternative experimentation, the songs can often land like a jazz standard that got lost multiple times on its journey to the present day. Some pit stops are obvious: the haunting balladry of Nina Simone and Leonard Cohen, and the arresting no-wave of James Chance and The Lounge Lizards.

FFO: Michael Kiwunaka, Herbie Hancock & Leonard Cohen

May Day celebrations:
Bedford Park (by the Pavilion in the Park) @ dawn

On 1 May, Red Cuthbert Morris will be dancing up the sun on May Day once again, outside the Pavilion in the Park, though the audience will have a bit of a wait for the café to open!Morris dancing on May Day is a centuries old custom, welcoming the traditional start of summer. While dancing the sun up only goes back to 1930s Oxford, it is a fun way to make the day a bit different and though our early morning audience is usually few in number they usually seem to enjoy it. We will be performing from just before 5.30am, so that we will be dancing at the precise time the sun rises.

Red Cuthbert is an inclusive morris dancing side based in Bedford, open to all adults regardlesss of age, gender and ethnicity as folk dancing is for everyone. The side has been going since 2012, and dance a mixture of our own creations, traditional Border morris, and some Cotswold morris. We seek to fan the flames of a living tradition, and make it fun for our audiences and ourselves.

Red Cuthbert is open to new members, whether dancers or musicians, practicing on Thursday evenings unless we have a performance that night – more information is on our website at www.redcuthbert.uk or can be found on social media where we are @RedCuthbert on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and Mastodon (folksocial.org) and can be tracked with the hashtag #RedCuthbertMorris

The Cambridgeshire Crucifixion

David Ingham

In 2017, a routine archaeological dig was taking place on the site of a proposed housing development in the village of Fenstanton in the Cambridgeshire Fens. When human remains were found alongside a variety of Roman artefacts, none of the team at Albion Archaeology saw anything out of the ordinary. But once the bones were washed back at HQ, something highly unusual was uncovered: a nail through the heelbone of one of the individuals. Could this be evidence of a Roman crucifixion?

Historic Building Mythbusting

James Wright

In his third visit to Bedford Skeptics, James Wright will dive into commonly believed and repeated stories about historic buildings.

James will explore folklore, history, art, architecture, archaeology, sociology, and psychology to delve into the myths surrounding many mysterious features in mediaeval buildings. We can learn so much of value about a society through what it builds. By explaining the development of myths and the underlying truths behind them, a broader and deeper understanding of historic buildings can bring us that little bit closer to their former occupants. Sometimes the realities hiding behind the stories are even more interesting, romantic, and exciting than the myth itself…

James Wright of Triskele Heritage will release Historic Building Mythbusting – Uncovering Folklore, History and Archaeology via The History Press on 6 June 2024.
