Brickhill Primary welcomed a VIP guest this week to open the school’s brand-new library space.
The High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, Russell Beard, was treated to a tour of the school by the Head Boy and Girl, before officially opening the new library.
Russell visited classes to meet and greet the children and hosted an assembly to explain how he was appointed by the king and what the role of the High Sheriff meant.
He spoke to the children about charities and how they are run by volunteers, encouraging the children to think about others. Taking questions from the audience, many of the children were very interested in the ceremonial clothing that is worn by the High Sheriff and quizzed Russell about himself and the role.
Brickhill Primary School’s reading champions met Russell at the new library, where he conducted an official opening.
Previously, the school library was in a small room, which was only used during lesson times. However, the school has been able to transform a disused classroom into a facility that can be used all day.
Dan Wiltshire, Brickhill Primary’s Deputy Head, said: “Our new library has been fully funded through donations of furniture and decorations from the local community, and a wide range of new books purchased through our PTA whose funding comes from the parents of children at the school.
“We are now able to offer the library as a space during lunchtime, where the children are learning to love books and enjoy sharing these with others. The new facility is aiding us with promoting a love of reading and learning within the school.”
After the official opening, the High Sheriff spoke to the children about reading and its importance and the pupils had a chance to share some of their favourite stories with him.
Debbie Wilson, head teacher said: “We are grateful to Russell Beard for visiting our school; the children enjoyed meeting him and were full of questions for him.
“Our new library facilities are a wonderful asset to our school of which the children visit regularly, whilst constantly asking the teachers if they can visit the space more often.
“Thank you to Mr Veal for organising and facilitating this visit.”
