A Sharnbrook Sixth Form student and Bedford Borough Youth Cabinet member has spoken of her pride and excitement about the Universal Studios development, calling it a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity for the area and a reason for young people to build their futures locally.
Amelie, a Year 12 student, was one of the young voices representing Bedford at the project’s official announcement at Kimberley College in April. There, she met with the Prime Minister, Chancellor, and other key figures involved in the proposal.
“For a market town – it’s amazing,” she said. “There’s been excitement everywhere. It’s not every day you get to be involved in something that will change where you live in such a huge way.”
Bedford Borough Council officers have regularly briefed Amelie about the development and say the potential for career opportunities is “unlike anything we’ve seen before”.
This is especially true for students, school leavers, and those looking to train in mechanical, retail, hospitality, or leadership roles.
“These aren’t just jobs,” she said. “They’re real careers. I’ve already met people who started out as hot dog vendors at Universal and are now senior managers. There’s a real chance for people here to build something, to become part of the Universal family, and to dream big.”
‘We need to be connected’
Amelie is also urging local leaders to ensure these opportunities are accessible to everyone across the Borough, and not limited by geography or transport availability.
“This isn’t just about creating jobs, it’s about making sure everyone can get to them,” she said. “It’s not just a dream anymore. We need Bedford to be connected, with good public transport, so that everyone has a fair chance to be part of this.”
With new proposals already announced to improve road, rail and bus services, Amelie said it’s essential that infrastructure keeps pace with development.
“We need to think about the bigger picture,” she said. “With major proposals already announced for our roads, buses, and trains, we have a real opportunity to ensure our transport network grows with us, supporting residents, businesses, and visitors for years to come.”
Staying power
Amelie says the sense of community pride is noticeable as excitement builds ahead of the expected planning application for the Universal site. She hopes this will mark a turning point for Bedford’s future.
“This project gives me a reason to stay here,” she said. “To build my future in Bedford Borough, in my home.”
