A British medic, who has been supported by campaigners in Turvey, will be giving a talk this Saturday at the Three Cranes pub in the village, on what he’s faced on the front line in Ukraine.
Connor Braithwaite will be giving an “uncensored presentation” of photos, videos and first-hand accounts of what he has been doing over there to help Ukrainians and how you can continue to help.
Organiser Rob Hammond has himself been busy pulling together support for the Ukraine appeal.

He and friends, supported by his employer Conquest Wildman have driven to the country several times with food, clothing, medical supplies and even an ambulance thanks to the generosity of people across Bedford Borough and beyond.

While that support has gone a long way, Rob says the efforts must continue.
“This is YOUR chance to hear a first-hand account of what is happening in Ukraine right now, not from the newspapers, TV or radio, but directly from someone we have been supporting whilst working in Ukraine,” says Rob.
“It is also an opportunity to see how a small village like Turvey has helped Connor, and understand how individuals, organisations and local businesses can continue to make a huge difference to people’s lives in Ukraine.”
Connor will be giving an honest and sometimes graphic presentation on a number of subjects related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and what he’s witnessed, including:
- Forget the news headlines – see what is really happening in Ukraine from someone who is working on the front lines.
- See how the aid and donations from Turvey supporting Ukraine so far have helped Connor’s team save lives there
- Be the first to hear about Connor’s new project in Kharkiv and show your support simply by attending the event and bringing as many people as you can along with you
- Understand the real situation and spread the news about what we are trying to achieve
Some of Connor’s presentation contains graphic images, attendees will be warned prior to those images appearing on screen.
People will also be able to ask questions and chat with Conner about his work there afterwards.
Under-equipped fire service
One of the objectives the group is fundraising for this time is to purchase one or more fire engine appliances.
Connor has said the fire service in Kharkiv are dealing with building fires every few days and they are “massively under-equipped.”

Rob is now asking as many local business owners, organisations, and anyone else from across Bedford Borough who has helped us so far to come to the event.
“If people wanted to sponsor the fire engine purchase or fund getting it there that would be a great help and of course, we’d make sure everyone knows about what they’ve done to help us if they would like them to know,” said Rob.
