A twelve-year-old boy from Turvey is set to launch his own veg and fruit cart later this month after receiving messages of support from two of the UK’s most recognisable farming figures.
Alfie Smith, a member of Bedford and District Young Farmers, will officially open his small business at the Turvey Christmas Fayre on Saturday, 30 November at 12 noon.
His aim, he says, is simple: to bring fresh local produce to his village and encourage people to support British farmers.
Farming support
Alfie has already attracted attention well beyond Bedford Borough. Gareth Wyn Jones, often referred to as the nation’s favourite farmer, has shared Alfie’s post on social media and sent him a personal video wishing him luck.
Gareth, who farms in the Carneddau mountains of North Wales, where his family has worked the land for 350 years, is known nationwide for championing sustainable British produce, as well as for his books and TV work, including The Family Farm.
Alfie has also received a good luck message from Kaleb Cooper – best known for his role in the farming series Clarkson’s Farm – who sent his support all the way from Australia.
Wants to make a difference
Explaining why he has set up his veg cart, Alfie said he hopes to make it easier for people in the village to shop locally.
“I started my small business because I want to encourage people to shop local and support local farmers. I want to bring fresh vegetables and fruit to my local community in the village, and hope to have a regular spot so I can carry on trading from my cart.
“I enjoy the farming way of life, and I have worked with farmers locally. I have been a member of Bedford Young Farmers since I was 10 years old and continue to compete in many local activities.
“Please come down to my stall and see what I have to offer. I look forward to seeing you all and will give the best possible price, always with a smile.”
Support a young entrepreneur
Staff at The Three Cranes pub, who organise the Turvey Christmas Fayre, said they were delighted to welcome Alfie to this year’s event.
In a message on social media, they said: “By shopping with Alfie, you are not only supporting a young local entrepreneur, but also a great cause – Alfie is proudly donating a percentage of his profits to RABI, which supports farming families across the UK.
“Come along, say hello, and pick up some fresh local produce – perfect for your festive table.”
