They put family first every day, now let’s put them first. Nominate a young carer as an Everyday Hero

The Bedford Independent Everyday Heroes Awards 2025 are now open for nominations, once again shining a light on the individuals across Bedford Borough who quietly change lives for the better.

One of the most moving categories is the Young Carer of the Year Award, sponsored by HEART Academies Trust, which celebrates young people under 18 who take on caring responsibilities far beyond their years.

The Young Carer of the Year Award, sponsored by HEART Academies Trust, recognises the extraordinary young people across Bedford Borough who dedicate their time to caring for a loved one.

There are an estimated 800,000 young carers aged 5-17 in the UK. Many take on responsibilities far beyond their years.

They may help a parent, sibling, or other family member with daily tasks, provide emotional support, manage household duties, or care for younger brothers and sisters, all while balancing school and their own well-being.

To be nominated for this award, the carer must be under 18.

While they may carry out many of the same tasks as adult carers, young carers often do so quietly and without recognition. For many, it is simply part of everyday life.

Last year’s winner

In 2024, Charlie Lloyd, 16, received the Young Carer Award for caring for his mum, who lives with multiple chronic conditions, and for supporting five siblings with autism, while maintaining strong school grades.

Charlie, who has been caring for his mum for five years, was modest about receiving the award.

“There’s probably a lot more people doing a lot more than me. Bedford is a big place, and it’s not like I’m doing the most in the world,” he said.

“No one else is going to help, so I might as well. It’s just sort of living for me. It has its challenges, but it’s not like the hardest thing in the world.”

The 2025 awards ceremony will take place on Thursday, 07 May, at The Quarry Theatre, with Bedford School as host sponsor and The Quarry Theatre as venue sponsor.
