Bedford School choristers lend their voices to Remembrance Day song

Members of Bedford School’s Chapel Choir took part in a very special recording project this week, with singer/songwriter Jamie Lonsdale.

The boys – aged between 12 and 16 – were recorded singing inside the school’s iconic grade II chapel and will feature on Jamie’s new single, ‘White Doves of Peace’, which is will be released worldwide on 5 November.

The single has been written by Jamie to commemorate Remembrance Day and all the souls who have fought across the world, with an emphasis on the importance of peace and respect for one another.

A full symphony orchestra and a military brass band have already been recorded at the world-famous Abbey Road Studios in London and additional vocals have been recorded by The Chelsea Pensioners (all retired soldiers from the British Army).

Descriving the experience of hearing the Bedford School choristers sing his words, Jamie said, “The acoustics and the sound were incredible. It was such a pleasure to see the school and meet the 10 choristers who sang my song.

“They’ve been rehearsing for the past two weeks and their voices are angelic. I hope they enjoyed singing it as much as we enjoyed listening to it.

“The song aspires to global peace, a fairer world, living in harmony whilst always remembering those who gave their lives.”

The juxtaposition of the young boys who will be the heroes of tomorrow, the Chelsea Pensioners who are the heroes of yesterday, and Jamie in the middle, is a powerful message.

Among the choristers was Alexander Olleson, a music scholar at the school and member of Bedford School Chapel Choir, who won the grand final of the BBC Young Chorister of the year competition in 2020.

Head of Choral Music at Bedford School, Keith Roberts said: “It was a great privilege for boys from Bedford School to be involved in this project, to work (albeit remotely) with Chelsea Pensioners and to have an orchestral backing track.

“They were a credit to the Chapel Choir and school and should be very proud of their singing and their professional behaviour.”

It is not the first time that boys from the Chapel Choir have been involved in Armistice commemorations, having been the sole robed choir at the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall in 2015.

Jamie Lonsdale’s single ‘White Doves of Peace’ will now be mixed and mastered in London ready for its release on Friday 5 November and it will be available to download on all major music platforms.
