Slide Record Shop: David Marsh jazz collection listening evening

Thursday 6 December at 6pm

Slide Record Shop is thrilled to be able to share a with its customers a very special record collection, containing some of the most sought after and important records in the history of British and American jazz. ON Thursday 6 December, customers are invited to listen and have a first browse of these records.

The collection belonged to David Marsh, a life-long lover of jazz. Throughout his lifetime David developed a collection of over 500 records that covers the greats of US, European and UK post-war jazz.

“David clearly had an excellent ear, attending concerts and collecting records that demonstrated adventurous taste, as well foresight,” said Slide Records’ Warren Allsop.  “Within the collection are first pressings of records that are now considered lost classics of British jazz: recordings that broke new ground musically and are considered ‘holy grails’ for vinyl record collectors.”

The collection includes “Dusk Fire” and “Live” from the Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet, The New Jazz Orchestra’s “Le Dejeuner Sur L’Herbe”, Amancio D’Silva’s “Integration” and his follow-up with Joe Harriott “Hum-Dono”.

“Despite the value of David’s collection, his friends recall always being welcome to borrow records provided, they were returned and “you put it back where you found it”,” said Warren.  “When we became aware of the rarity and value of the collection his widow, Sue’s, first concern was that they should go to people who would listen to, enjoy and appreciate them, as that is what David would have wanted.”

Warren has taken these words to heart and is inviting Slide customers to listen to some these very special records. Customers will also have a chance to get a first look the wider collection and raise a glass in thanks to David.
