The Great Big Green Week is returning this June, a celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.

From Saturday, 8 – Sunday, 16 June, Bedfordshire Climate Change Forum and Friends of the Earth Bedford will be hosting events throughout Bedford Borough – all for free.

The theme for events during the 2024 week is ‘swaps’, with sustainability and sharing at the top of the agenda in Bedford.

Here’s our round-up of just some of the events taking place during the week, but do check out their Facebook page and their website for up-to-date information.

Now in its fifth year, the popular annual Yoga in the Park event will be held a couple of weeks early this year to coincide with The Big Green Week.

From 10am til 7pm on Sunday, 9 June, the day will feature 18 free yoga and well-being sessions led by fully qualified coaches, all in the peaceful surroundings of Bedford Park.

From Hatha to Ashtanga Vinyasana, Chair Yoga to Tai Chi there will also be sound baths, laughter yoga, and mindful games for children and families.

On Thursday, 13 June The Green Earth Cafe hosts The Bedfordshire Community Meetup, an opportunity for like-minded individuals to come together to discuss and share ideas, thoughts and ways to work collaboratively.

The Higgins Bedford, John Bunyan Museum and the Panacea Museum will all be running free events throughout the day on Saturday 15 June.

Events at the John Bunyan Museum run from 11am – 3pm and are perfect for all the family. Artist Anne-Marie Abbate will be sharing how to make felted flowers, visitors can help the museum’s volunteers plant their community garden and make Andy Goldsworthy-inspired natural sculptures.

There will also be a camouflage materials trail around the garden.  All activities are free to attend and there is no need to book

From 11am – 4pm at the Higgins Bedford, you can try your hand at simple willow weaving with Bob Collins and meet the ‘Mend-Up Crew’ who will be sharing the radical art of mending things.

You can bring your own textiles and get some help with mending, or just have a chat with the team. Both of these events are ‘drop in’ and there is no need to book.

For ages three and over, the Recycled Gardening workshops with The Good Life Garden are taking place at 11am, 1pm and 3pm, these are bookable at thehigginsbedford.org.uk/Book_Online.

Put your recycling to good use in your garden! Explore your creative side, and learn how to make mini planters, bird feeders and more by using things you would have in your own home. (Recycling materials will be provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own if you want).

And finally, just across the road at the Panacea Museum, there will be a free Crafts Stash Swap from 11am – 4.30pm. Bring along any craft materials you no longer need and either donate or swap with something else.

The perfect sustainable way to end The Great Big Green Week in Bedford.
