Festus Akinbusoye, a political figure in the UK associated with the Conservative Party, assumed the role of Bedfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner after a successful election campaign in 2021. This appointment marked a significant milestone as he became the first person of black British heritage to hold this position. Additionally, he was the only individual from a Black, Asian, and Minority ethnic background who was elected as a PCC in the 2021 election cycle. His contributions to law enforcement were recognized in March 2023 when he was named a board member of the College of Policing. Furthermore, he was chosen as the Conservative Party’s candidate for the Mid Bedfordshire parliamentary seat, which was previously held by Nadine Dorries.

Born in Nigeria, Akinbusoye relocated to the United Kingdom at the age of thirteen along with his parents and twin sister. They chose to reside in Canning Town, situated in East London. His educational journey saw him attend St Paul’s Way School, Bow, and later the City of Westminster College. He then pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Communications from the London College of Printing and Distributive Trades. His academic pursuits didn’t stop there, as he also completed a Masters Degree in International Studies and Diplomacy from the School of Oriental and African Studies. His formative experiences with the Stop and Search procedure during his youth in London, coupled with his time mentoring young prison inmates, have deeply influenced his approach to policing.

In his political career, Akinbusoye has held the role of Senior Parliamentary Assistant to Mark Lancaster, Iain Stewart, and Ben Everitt. In the 2015 United Kingdom general election, he ran as a Conservative candidate for the West Ham constituency. He served as the Chairman of the Milton Keynes Conservatives from 2018 to 2021. He has publicly defended the use of Stop and Search powers by police, reflecting his experiences as a Special Constable in Bedfordshire Police.

His political journey took a significant turn on June 15, 2023, when he was chosen as the Conservative Party’s candidate for the Mid Bedfordshire by-election.
