Concern is mounting for the safety of birds and waterfowl in Bedford after four swans, a goose and a pigeon have all been found dead around the Embankment in Bedford.
Referring to a suspected outbreak of Avian Flu, Joanne Gullon at St Bedes Ford Swannery said: “If feeding the waterfowl, I’d ask that people feed in the water, and stay alert to any signs of dead wild birds.
“All sightings of dead birds should be reported to the Environment Agency.”
A Bedford Borough Council spokesperson said: “There have been reports of deceased birds on the River Great Ouse, which we are investigating alongside Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs)
“We cannot confirm their cause of death at this stage so are encouraging residents to exercise caution.
“If you come across any other dead or visibly sick birds in the local area, please do not feed or touch them. Instead, report it to Defra’s GB helpline by calling 03459 335577.
“If you keep poultry or other birds, wash your hands and clean and disinfect your footwear before tending to them.
“More advice and guidance is available on the GOV.UK website.”
