Over halfway there...

The SMART CJS CRIB appeal has already achieved over half its fundraising target, which aims to raise £60,000 in aid of the Prebend Day Centre for the homeless.

It costs over £250,000 per year to keep the centre open and it is entirely reliant on donations and the support of the community.

This year the team are facing the additional costs of an old building in need of repairs, and they need people’s help more than ever!

Anita McCallum, CEO of SMART CJS says of the CRIB Appeal: “I wondered if uncertainty caused by the General Election would affect people’s generosity – but it doesn’t seem to have dampened people’s spirits.

“Thanks to our kind supporters we have reached £30,600 so far – that’s an amazing 51% already achieved.”

For the most vulnerable members of society, the winter months are the toughest, with biting winds, dampness and frosty conditions making for a miserable existence for those who find themselves at the lowest point in their lives.

“With donations from Church groups, Rotary Clubs, businesses, fundraising teams and individuals the SMART Prebend Centre can make a difference and help those who desperately need human kindness,” said Anita.

“My heartfelt thanks go to everyone who is supporting the appeal.”

The SMART Prebend Centre is open 365 days of the year supporting those who sleep rough, are vulnerably housed and socially isolated.

The centre is a place of safety; providing food, warmth, water, showers and a place to rest. Further, it provides an opportunity to assess peoples’ needs and engage them in longer term support to move beyond homelessness.

Now more than ever, we need your help to fund the Bedford Independent’s quality journalism that serves our community...

We choose to champion editorial independence, meaning we report the facts without bias and can stand up to those in power when we believe it’s needed.

We can give a voice to people in our community whose voices may otherwise not be heard. And we don’t have a paywall, so everyone can read the stories we publish for free.

But in this time of crisis, many news organisations all over the world are facing existential threat, with advertising revenues plummeting. We’re no different.

We work hard every day to bring you news, commentary, entertainment and announcements from across Bedford. We hope that, with your help, we’ll be able to continue this for many years to come.
