BGI School, which opened its doors at the new location earlier this year on 7 January is the result of a successful merger between two local independent schools.

The modern, co-educational, non-selective school now caters to pupils from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) through to Sixth Form.

Well-being and innovation

The new building’s design prioritises the well-being of pupils and staff, featuring ample natural light, enhanced ventilation, and extensive outdoor spaces.

During his visit, The Duke of Gloucester met with Principal Ian Daniel, Chair of Trustees David Eyton-Williams, and representatives from Pellikaan Construction Limited and Lungfish Architects.

The architecture, inspired by the “forest school” ethos, blends seamlessly with the surrounding rural landscape, promoting a hands-on, learner-led approach to education.

His Royal Highness unveiled a commemorative plaque, marking the official opening and the beginning of a new chapter for the school.

The Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire said: “It was a great honour for me to join His Royal Highness at the official opening.

“With its beautiful views over the north Bedfordshire countryside, the school will provide an exceptional environment in which pupils can benefit from all the learning opportunities offered by this purpose-built facility.

“My thanks go to Head Ian Daniel and his team for their warm welcome.”

Ian Daniel, principal of BGI School added, “We are immensely proud to showcase our unique school to His Royal Highness and express our gratitude for his visit today.”

Students who have moved to the new site from their previous classrooms were also enthusiastic.

One told the Bedford Independent, “I love it here. There’s much more room, the classrooms are brilliant and we don’t have to cross to different sites. Everyone is really happy.”

Also in attendance at the visit were distinguished local officials, including assistant chief constable of Bedfordshire Police John Murphy, Mohammad Yasin MP (Labour) and the mayor of Bedford Borough Tom Wootton (Conservative).
