Road works to improve Manton Lane traffic begin this week

Transporting Bedford 2020
Bedford Borough Council say the second phase of the works in the Manton Lane/Clapham Road area won't start until after Bromham Road Bridge has reopened.

Road works have begun on Manton Lane. Bedford Borough Council say it’s to help cut traffic congestion and improve journeys across the town.

It’s all part of their £18 million Transporting Bedford 2020 plan.

The works:

  • Are designed to improve the way traffic signals control traffic at the junction of Brickhill Drive/Manton Lane
  • Will install three-way traffic lights at the junction with Bedford Modern School
  • Will widen the road to ease the flow of traffic on Manton Lane

For the school run, works will be restricted to between 9.30am-3.30pm. But during school holidays they’ll be carried out from 8am-6pm. They’re expected to last until late Autumn.

A further phase of works to install a footbridge over Manton Lane and improve traffic flow around the wider Manton Lane/Clapham Road area and Paula Radcliffe Way/Great Ouse Way roundabouts will also start at a later date.

A spokesperson at Bedford Borough Council said: “… We apologise for any inconvenience caused while the works are carried out, but ultimately they will bring benefits for all road users.

“There will be signage in place to make everyone aware and we would encourage you to leave ample time for your journey while the work takes place.”
