Over 500 car accidents have been recorded in Bedfordshire over the past year, a significant spike over the previous years and many of which were preventable.

The Department for Transport (DfT) claim that on average, five people died and 80 were seriously injured each day from car accidents in the UK in 2024: a 7% and a 15% increase respectively from 2023.

According to Accident Claims Advice, Luton alone experienced 169 accidents in 2024, mainly caused by factors such as reckless driving, speeding and distracted driving.

The data suggests that you are three times more likely to crash in Luton compared to Bedford, the second-highest area for accidents.

The most common cause of accidents is reckless driving, leading to 30% of those recorded in Bedfordshire by the DfT. The weather may have influenced some of these incidents, so the advice is to always be aware of the potential risks.

Slow down

Many fatal accidents are caused by speeding, and the difference between a 60mph crash and a 70mph crash is life and death.

In Bedfordshire, one-third of accidents were caused by speeding, so sometimes, do remind yourself that you are not Lewis Hamilton.

Stay focused

Driving whilst distracted poses a great risk. The standard of having giant screens across the dashboard in every modern car as well as the increase in mobile phone usage limits the driver’s awareness of their surroundings.

A sudden stop ahead may cause the driver not being able to react in time. Isolating yourself from the road puts you and others at risk around you.

Bedfordshire police have made over 750 arrests related to dangerous driving in 2024/25, over 400 of them are facing a charge.

Tracey Chick from the Bedfordshire Police said: “People should realise the dangers of driving,” and the “life-long consequences” an accident could have on your physical or mental health.
