Second half goals from Josh Setchell and Joey Evans gave Real Bedford a big 2-0 win against playoff chasing Leverstock Green at McMullen Park on Saturday afternoon.

After back-to-back draws against AFC Dunstable and title rivals, MK Irish, Rob Sinclair’s side needed to returning to winning ways to keep up the pressure on the Buckinghamshire side, and they did just that.

MK Irish’s 1-1 draw at Potton United meant Real have once again opened up a six-point gap the top of Spartans South Midlands Premier Division, but Irish do still have three games in hand.

Leverstock Green had already beaten Rob Sinclair’s side 2-1 at the beginning of February, and were going to once again prove a challenge but Real saw them off with two second half goals.

The visitors caused a stir in the opening minutes when Tyler McGregor could have given away a penalty but the referee waved away calls from Green for a spot kick, before an orange shirt almost deflected the ball into his own net.

McGregor was called into action again at the end of the half as Radu Stefanoaica was denied by the Bedford keeper when through on goal, with Real restricted to snap shots from outside the area.

Half-time saw both sides go into the sheds goalless, but Real eventually found the breakthrough on the hour mark thanks to Josh Setchell.

Setchell slotted home after being put through by Joey Evans, and fifteen minutes later, Evans got a goal of his own – his 37th of a brilliant campaign – to seal all three points for Real Bedford.

The game was sealed when the visitors went down to ten men; Radu Stefanoaica was sent off for a second bookable offence and although Real hit the post late on with a free kick, the points were already in the bag.

Ladies continue 100% record with hard fought win

The Ladies have continued their unique goalscoring feats in recent weeks, and continued their romp towards Eastern Region Women’s Football League success with victory at St Albans on Sunday.

It was the side’s 14th league win in 14 games and puts them seven points clear of second-placed Haringey with four games in hand.

A wonder strike from Erin Price helped Real recover from going behind in the 3rd minute to lowly St Albans before Francesca Partridge met Martin’s cross just moments later to put Bedford into the lead.

The 2-1 victory was a far cry from the more dominant of performances in recent weeks, in which Real thrashed Watford Development 11-2 in the League Cup quarter-finals before squeezing past Luton Town last week to reach the final.

Real Bedford will face Wroxham in the final on 19th May.

A 17-1 victory against Wootton Blue Cross Reserves in the County Cup only served to boost the scoring stats of a side who have had no trouble finding the goal this season.
