Goldington Road will welcome opposition for the final time this season as Doncaster Knights roll into town with Bedford Blues looking to consolidate fourth place in the Championship table with a timely victory.

Both sides have stumbled in recent weeks having both been seen off by an in-form Ampthill team, but history is in the Blues’ favour as they have a far better record at home in this fixture in comparison with Castle Park.

While second place is still a mathematical possibility, it is now highly improbable with focus now fully turned to a top four place beginning with this key clash against Doncaster, who sit four points behind in fifth.

Mike Rayer will be hoping in a change of fortunes from the reverse fixture in January where Doncaster squeezed home 26-20 in South Yorkshire, and a win will be a first in almost a month since the Blues’ away victory in Nottingham at the beginning of April.

With just two games of the Championship season remaining after this weekend – one of which is against Champions-elect, Ealing – there is an air of importance hovering over this encounter.

All in all, despite recent struggles, it has been an excellent season for Bedford, and Rayer, his players and coaching staff will be keen not to throw it all away at the last.

Fifty up for French

Mike Rayer makes five changes in search of a much-needed Doncaster scalp.

Most of them are in the pack as the two props are rotated with Jamie Jack and Oisin Heffernan coming in either side of James Fish while Jordan Onojaife gains a start in what will be his final Goldington Road appearance before retirement.

Will Maisey returns at fly half replacing Louis Grimoldby while Seán French earns his 50th cap in Blues colours in continuing on the right wing with the Irishman chasing the top of the Championship’s try scoring charts.
