It is 18 months since Andreas Doverstav and Tom Healey took over The Longholme Cafe by the boating lake in Bedford. In that time, they’ve worked tirelessly with Bedford Borough Council to clear the lake of weeds and have greatly enhanced the whole area.
Their hard work has paid off and the lake is now home to more wildlife than ever before. Among the swans, geese, ducks, moorhens, kingfishers and coots, a heron has taken up residence and one customer spotted an otter on Wednesday morning.
“Team Longholme, and espeically Adrian, have worked really hard to clear the boating lake,” said co-owner, Andreas. “It’s great to see the impact that’s had on the wildlife and we’re delighted to have an otter in the lake. Our customers come all year round and there’s something to enjoy whatever the season.”
Andreas and Tom are keen to minimise their impact on the environment, using recyclable and biodegradable cutlery and food packaging for their takeaways and Deliveroo orders.
On Thursday, the Longholme hosts Late Night Lates as part of the festive fireworks display to celebrate the Christmas light switch on. From 5 – 8.30pm they will be serving freshly made soup, hot chocolate and mulled wine. Children will receive a free LED wand with each purchase.
