Dear editor,
I’ve been moved to write in response to your [Bedford Ian’s] comments on the qualities of local politicians.
I don’t remember it being any different in the 90s. Indeed, I think that is why Patrick Hall MP (Labour) and Frank Branston (Independent) pushed so hard to have a directly elected mayor.
The council’s culture is unhelpful.
I get the impression that mayor Tom Wootton is trying to break through but is being ground down by the nastiness and negativity.
My solution? Maybe term limits? Some individuals have been councillors for decades and are now older than they realise. But even some of the younger ones are remarkably fuddy-duddy in their outlook.
