Dear editor,
Bravo Mr. Jamil Ahmed, bravo. So eloquently put and I would like to endorse the well-scripted letter in reference to the rarity of free drinking water fountains in our county town and surrounding areas.
Read: To drink or not to drink from Bedford’s water fountains?
He explains perfectly well the need to restore this public facility, the benefits of which are enormous and far-reaching, not only from the life-giving water but also for the environment.
I understand perfectly well that suppliers of plastic bottled water would be against such a move however, as Mr Ahmed stated, the state of our home world is more important than profit.
I urge the local authorities to grab this opportunity with both hands and improve our town facilities, it would be politically advantageous as well don’t you think?

Council response
The Bedford Independent shared the concerns and comments about publically accessible water fountains and asked for their response.
A spokesperson said: “While we have no current plans for refurbishment or new sites, we continue to promote and highlight the refill water drinking stations, including those which we will have across the River Festival event this weekend to allow residents, and visitors to the event to fill up, reuse their containers to refill with clean fresh water.
“Bedford Borough Council have signed up as Refill Stations, helping Refill Bedford create a network of local places where people can go fill up their reusable water bottles for free.
“‘Refill’ is a nationwide campaign working to connect people with thousands of local businesses, community venues, transport hubs and public fountains where they can refill for free.”
