Cardington, Cople, Willington


Cardington, Cople and Willington sit to the far south east of the Borough. Cardington, a small picturesque village, has recently been developed with newer builds adjoining the old village. With only one pub and a church, schooling is offered in nearby Shortstown and in Bedford itself.

However, Cardington is well known for its two large aircraft hangers - a legacy from WW1 when they were developed as airship works by Short Brothers.

They then formed part of an RAF training station which ran over to neighbouring Shortstown and Eastcotts. Since then the hangers have been used under a variety of guises, including housing 2 Goodyear Blimps in 2011.

The hangers have now been turned into Cardington Studios with the space being used for films, TV and music videos including Fantastic Beasts and How to Find Them, Batman Begins and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Home to two of the Borough’s football clubs Bedford Town FC and Bedford FC it also houses Cardington Artificial Slalom Course – an artificial whitewater canoe slalom - that was the first of its kind in the UK and used for training and competitions.

To the east of Cardington, the village of Cople centres around All Saints Church dated from 1087 and the de Beauchamp family.
