Location Summary

Whilst Castle Ward is commonly referred to as the Castle Road area it does span most of the town centre through to the train station, down towards Rope Walk with Goldington Road to the North.

The Ward is named after the Castle (now the Castle Mound) that was destroyed under the reign of King Henry 3rd in 1224.

It is also where John Bunyan wrote The Pilgrim’s Progress whilst imprisoned in Bedford Gaol in 1660. Home to museums, churches, The Corn Exchange, theatres, cafes, pubs and bars there is a lot to explore in the Ward, not least the Great River Ouse and the Embankment which leads towards Russell Park.



Bedford’s town centre with the Harpur Centre and surround housing the main shopping area, includes Boots, Debenhams, Next, Primark, TK Maxx, Waterstones and a wide range of independents.

New development Riverside North has added a Cinema and various restaurants and bars including Wagamama’s and Zizzi’s.

Sitting amongst these are the central post office, bus station, train station, library, court and police station. And just south of the river sits Bedford Borough Hall (Council Offices situated here) and Bedford College.

With Bedford College offering further education, the ward has Priory Primary School and Castle Newnham School which spans from 4-16 years across its 2 sites.

Independent Bedford Girls School to the south of the river is part of the Harpur Trust and Bedford Free School opened in 2012 offering mixed secondary education.

Newnham to the east of Castle Ward houses the western side of Castle Road and Bedford’s Priory Country Park and Marina along with (soon to be redeveloped) Aspects complex with Cinema and Gym.

Opposite Aspects you can see Bedford International Athletics Stadium an official training site for the 2012 Olympics (Paula Radcliffe has trained there) and host to a variety of activities within its indoor and outdoor premises.

Within the Riverfield Drive Estate there is a large Tesco, Waitrose and Lidl and whilst there are no schools in the Ward, children attend nearby schools in Goldington or Castle.
