Kempston could have a new fitness centre – if plans for a “long-vacant” building are approved.
Plans have been submitted to Bedford Borough Council seeking permission to change the use of vacant office space at The Saxon Centre in Kempston into a gym.

In a cover letter accompanying the application, the applicants said the three-storey building has been vacant for around 15 years.
The applicant’s agents said the floorspace has remained vacant “despite long-term marketing” and that there has been a “reduction in demand for office space in tertiary office locations such as Kempston”.
The proposed gym is intended to provide fitness, health and leisure facilities.
According to the submission, this would include cardiovascular equipment and free weights, as well as dedicated changing facilities for men and women.
The applicant said they do not propose any external alterations and added that a separate application for signage would be submitted if required.
Town council questions
Kempston Town Council has commented on the application, saying councillors would welcome the building being brought back into use, but raised questions about the submitted plans.
In its response, the town council noted “some confusion” with the drawings provided.
Members said the existing and proposed plans appeared identical and asked for more detail on the intended changes.
However, the council concluded that it would welcome the building being put to use.
The overall consultation expiry date is Monday, 23 February 2026. More information is available on the council’s planning portal, reference 25/02528/COU.
