Bedford drivers face a month of travel disruption as overnight road closures affect Greyfriars from late September.

The closures will run between 9pm and 5am every night from 27 September to 28 October.

Contractors require the overnight access to carry out road resurfacing, layout new road markings and complete associated structural works safely.

Council officials scheduled the works at night to reduce delays for daytime drivers and local businesses.

Pedestrian access

Pedestrians will maintain access through Greyfriars at all times during the overnight works.

Contractors will install temporary walkways and short diversions to guide pedestrians safely past active work zones.

Wider transformation

The resurfacing forms part of a larger project to transform the Greyfriars area in Bedford town centre.

Future plans for the location include narrowing the existing road, constructing new homes at the former police station site, and upgrading walking and cycling infrastructure at the main junction.

Bedfordians can view further details and diversion updates on the Bedford Borough Council website at bedford.gov.uk/greyfriars.
