Location Summary

Elstow, now known as a suburb to the south of Bedford, still maintains its historic feel with original Village Green (where May Day Festivals are still held) and some of the original village which dates between the 13th century and 17th century and is classified as a conservation area.

Sitting aside the Green is timber framed Moot Hall, built in the 15th century as Elstow’s Courthouse and Market. It has now been renovated to house artefacts from one of the most famous Bedfordian’s – John Bunyan author of the Pilgrim’s Progress – who was born in Elstow and christened in Elstow’s Abbey.

Now, 20th century housing surrounds the old village with Elstow Primary School serving the area.

To the west of Elstow is Kempston, a town with its own council and a population of c20,000. Within the town there are four primary schools, two secondary schools and three schools dedicated to children living in Bedford Borough with special educational needs.

Kempston’s main park is Addison Howard Park and the town has an array of clubs and sports amenities, from Kempston Pool to Kempston Rovers FC.

The town has a range of shops including Sainsbury’s and Lidl and close by is the Interchange Retail Park with Next, TK Maxx, Boots, Argos, B&Q amongst others.
