Location Summary

To the north east of Bedford is Great Barford, reportedly an important village at the time of the Domesday Book and a bridge that dates back to the 15th century, which was an important waterway crossing at the time. You can sit in the gardens of The Anchor pub with a view of the bridge, and alongside there is a footpath that takes you along the river for a walk to Bedford via Danish Camp.  The village is large with a mixture of old (dating to 17th century) and new houses. A Norman motte and bailey castle that sat in the village has now been replaced with a Priory.

Great Barford Primary Academy is situated in the village close to a village shop and surgery, and locals report that the best Chinese can be found at the Golden Cross where you can eat in or take away.

Roxton is far smaller than Great Barford and sits close to the A1. With a small primary school, two churches and Post Office, it is also served by the Spoke N’ Wheel café and restaurant which serves afternoon teas and evening meals, close to The Royal Oak Pub an established pub and hotel.

North of Roxton just off the A1 is Wyboston, known for Wyboston Lakes a large hotel with golf course, spa and conference facilities. As the name suggests, it has been built around the lake offering picturesque views from the hotel restaurant and golf course.

An agricultural area due to its proximity to the Great River Ouse, Wyboston is served by amenities in adjacent Eaton Socon which has larger supermarkets and schools.

Little Barford sits to the edge of Wyboston Lake and the Great River Ouse, to the east on the county boundary of Cambridgeshire, with St Denys Church being one of the main features of the parish. It is a very small village, with a manor house, farm and a few cottages.
