Carlton homelessness charity in finals for national award – and your vote counts

Bedfordshire homelessness charity Emmaus Village Carlton has made the final shortlist for a national award run by the Reuse Network.

The Reuse Network is the UK’s only membership body dedicated to charitable and voluntary reuse organisations that are helping reduce poverty and tackle waste.

Emmaus Village Carlton is nominated in the Reuse Organisation of the Year category and is up against six other organisations for the prestigious award.

The winning organisation will be relying on the support of the public to secure the award, so every vote counts.

If successful, this will be the charity’s second national award this year, having already scooped the Shopiago ‘Trade-in Shop of the Year Award’ for scanning 10,501 pre-loved books, CDs, DVDs and computer games, through its online sales platform.

Voting for this latest award closes on Wednesday, 30 August and the winner will be announced at an awards ceremony during the Reuse Network’s Gala Dinner on Tuesday, 10 October.

Nick Samuels, interim Chief Executive of Emmaus Village Carlton said: “We’re delighted to have been shortlisted for this prestigious national award as we pride ourselves on our commitment to reusing and recycling. We resell tonnes of donated items and recycle large quantities of metal and wood.

“Our greatest success story has been our textiles and books; during the last year from July 2022 to June 2023 we sent over 160 tonnes of textiles and books to recycling or resell providers.

“This is a significant increase on previous years which has been made possible thanks to our committed and hardworking members of staff,
companions and volunteers, all buying into the ethos behind it.

“Not only does this produce much-needed revenue for the charity, enabling us to provide brighter futures for people affected by homelessness, but it’s ethically important to protect our environment and reduce our carbon footprint.

“We hope we are voted as winners by the public to see our efforts recognised.”
