Care home residents marry after Covid cancelled their 2019 plans

The happy couple, who had to wait a year to tie the knot

Two care home residents who had hoped to tie the knot in 2020 were finally able to say ‘I do’ at their wedding ceremony on Saturday (7 May).

Susan and Gareth met after they both moved to Highfield Residential Home on Avon Drive in Brickhill. Susan has lived there since 2016 and Gareth since 215.

Gareth proposed to Susan on 18 April 2019 and the couple were due to get married in June 2020 but this was postponed due to Covid restrictions.

“This wedding has been completely chosen by them,” said a member of staff at the residential home.

“Staff have made things happen in line with their wishes, from Gareth choosing the engagement ring to their wedding outfits and the cake.”

Susan, who has been blind since birth, has been helped by staff who have described everything in detail to help her make decisions for the big day.

Just married: The happy couple, Susan and Gareth, return to Highfield Residential Home

The day began with Susan and Gareth having an early lunch before carers supported them to get ready.

A taxi then took Gareth and his carer to St Mark’s Church in Brickhill, with another taxi following 10 minutes behind, bringing his bride-to-be.

After the ceremony, Gareth and Susan returned to Highfield and were greeted by cheering staff who threw confetti to welcome them home.

To top the day off, the care home hosted a small party with entertainment from Dave Dean, an Andy Wiliams tribute act who has previously performed on Stars in Their Eyes. Susan sang a duet with him to bring their day to remember to an end.

Congratulations to the happy couple from everyone at the Bedford Independent.
