Breaking news: Wilko stores in Bedford are safe as 52 locations face closure

It has been confirmed that the two Wilko stores within Bedford Borough will remain open, despite the closure of over 50 branches in other locations.

This morning (Wednesday), the administrator, PwC named the 52 Wilko stores that will be closed with the loss of 1,016 jobs.

Both the Bedford High Street and Interchange Retail Park sites are safe from closure after the business went into administration.

“In the absence of viable offers for the whole business, very sadly store closures and redundancies of team members from those stores are now necessary,” said joint administrator at PwC, Edward Williams, yesterday.

“We know this has been a deeply unsettling time for everyone concerned and would like to express our gratitude to all Wilko team members for the dedication and support they have continued to give the business in the most trying of circumstances.”

In a statement on its website, PwC said: “The Group has been hit by incredibly challenging trading conditions, both throughout the pandemic and more recently as it has felt the impact of the cost of living crisis, resulting in increasing cashflow pressure and a deterioration in trading.”
