With the end of the football season on the horizon, in which Real Bedford are on the cusp of back-to-back league titles, the club have now announced a significant investment from one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges.

Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, former Olympic rowers turned billionaire investors, are the co-founders of Gemini and are now to become co-owners of Real Bedford Football Club while investing a monumental sum of money into the project at McMullen Park.

Real Bedford could secure their second successive league title on Saturday as they face Tring Athletic at McMullen Park, securing promotion to the 8th tier of English football, while the newly formed Ladies team are all but Champions in the Eastern Region Women’s Football League.

These divisions are usually not synonymous with investments from billionaires, but Real Bedford are not ones fearful of bucking the trend.

Announced at Peter McCormack’s ‘Cheat Code’ Bitcoin Conference at the Bedford Corn Exchange on Friday afternoon, the massive investment will contribute towards a brand new training centre and the launch of an Academy to help forward the ambitions of local talent.

There will also be continued investment into Women’s and youth football as well as an increase to Real Bedford’s hardship fund, designed to give everyone a chance of playing the beautiful game.

Translating vision into action

When McCormack announced his purchase of the club then known as Bedford FC in December 2021, his ambitions of reaching the Premier League were largely scoffed at.

There is of course a long way to go before that gets close to becoming a reality, but at this level of football, $4.5m, (translating to roughly £3.6m) is astronomical and will set the club up for years to come.

Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss are certainly two men that are impressed.

“When Peter first pitched the idea of investing in his local football club, he talked about getting them into the Football League”, said Tyler Winklevoss.

“We were intrigued by his passion but asked him directly how to get them into the Premier League.

“Since that conversation, Peter has proven he knows how to build a successful club, and we’re excited to become football club owners.”

Current owner and Chairman, Peter McCormack also commented, “We have had a great couple of years, hitting all the goals we have wanted for growing the club and supporting the community in a sustainable way.

“The demands of a fast-growing club are significant, and the backing from Tyler and Cameron will allow us to continue investing in Bedford and the local community.”

Budgets in and around the eighth and ninth tiers of the English football pyramid are famously small, while some are still recovering from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, and this news will be the envy of clubs battling it out in the lower echelons of the game.

One game away?

On the pitch, Rob Sinclair’s men are one weekend of results away from winning a mammoth battle with MK Irish and bringing the Spartans South Midlands Premier Division title back to McMullen Park.

MK Irish squeezed past Arlesey Town 1-0 on Thursday evening and travel to FC Romania on Saturday, and if they drop any points, a Real Bedford victory will secure them the championship.

A bumper crowd is expected at McMullen Park, as ‘Bitcoiners’ from around the world enjoy the second half of McCormack’s ‘Cheat Code’ event – an afternoon at the football.

With this news of major investment alongside a potential title deciding game, Saturday promises to be a special occasion at McMullen Park.
